I always worry that stainless steel is just too inflexible for inserting--no give or cushioning at all. Is it really as comfortable as something like silicone or rubber? I don't have a ton of experience with this.

I think my steel plug is far more comfortable than any of the silicone or rubber plugs I've ever tried. That may be the shape more that the material. Im not sure...

Steel is always smooth and never sticky. Large steel plugs are not going to be as comfortable as softer ones but small to medium sized ones should not be an issue. If it's not big enough to impinge on a bony area, it should be comfortable.

While I have not done this extensively, it can be done. During an extended bondage weekend, I had my girlfriend trussed overnight - which included a butt-plug held in place by her harness. We used a water based lubricant upon insertion and the next morning it came out with ease - no issues. My only suggestion is that you use a plug with a large base, (the beginners narrow plugs would seem problematic) and a water-based lubricant.
