So, I've been browsing the board and two otherwise unrelated topics made me think. They were a query about whether the plethora of porn images made anyone uncomfortable and another question where a set of novels was recommended.

It occurred to me that while I'm not deterred by porn images, they don't appeal to me nearly as much as the images created in my mind by well-written words. For me there is something so very sensual about well chosen words. I am an absolute bookworm.

I am familiar with the stories section here and with the bdsm library and I am no stranger to bdsm fanfic but I really have no clue about the books that are available from publishers.

Call me old fashioned, I love to turn real paper pages and I consume novels quite quickly. I am definitely going to look up the Andre Santhomas' Janos Novels that Smallest recommended but I'd welcome suggestions from others. I'm really only looking for fic where the slave/sub is a strong character. If they are put in challenging environments and have a tough time, that's great story telling, but I'm not interested in simpering 'subs' who allow themselves to be abused. I read almost any combination except f/f.

I'd love to try it all but I don't have money to waste on bad fic so any recommendations for the bdsm books that sit dog eared and well-read on your shelves would be great. Virtual cookies and cocoa may even be forthcoming.

Hi impkitty,
You don't say if you prefer FemDom or MaleDom stories.

If you like FemDom, I have posted several novel-length stories in installments on the orgasmdenial.com website under the user name "spudmachine". They're all free, and just search on my user name (use Advanced Search).

But here is a link to the first part of "Making Plans for Nigel".

And since you mentioned you like to feel the pages turn under your fingers, you can find my books here...

If you prefer MaleDom I haven't posted any stories in that sub-genre online, but my first novel, "The Slow Seduction of Claire MacDonald" is available here (where my pen name is "Marcus Andrews")...

And of course the finest MaleDom book ever written would be "The Story of O". It's better to read it in the original French, if possible ("L'Histoire d'O"), but the translation isn't too bad.

Cheers,
Stanley

Ooh, thankyou. The fic I've always tended to read is MaleDom but it's only because I've never really considered FemDom - it's definitely time to broaden my horizons for good fic. Congrats on the novel - I love the plot, it sounds intriguing, time for me to save pennies up. BTW I looked at your series and I do love the cover art for your books too.

As for the Story of O, I read it years ago, weirdly we had a copy kicking around my old workplace for ages and not a soul was bothered by it - I imagine there would be upset about it nowadays. It is definitely a book to fall in love with. I should find a copy to keep but it will have to be the translation, even a rough translation is better than my French!

Did I promise cookies ?... I definitely think you deserve choc- chip :)

You're most welcome, impkitty. Hopefully the free stories will let you get a feel for whether you like the FemDom sub-genre.

To be honest I would love to write a novel (or a series) in which a female character goes through a change from Domme to sub and maybe back again. But my publisher tells me that's not a recommended way to present characters. They seem to feel that it's better to stick to either Female or Male domination, and not to "mix it up". That's the reason I have a different pen name for my MaleDom fiction.

At least I can ignore that advice in the free fiction I post. You'll find that Andrea (the Domme in "Making Plans for Nigel") briefly becomes a submissive to somebody else later in the story.

And I would hope that even my submissive characters have got a bit of substance to them :)

My editor told me that my Domme's "don't seem to be out and out bitches, like most erotic fiction I read". And she reads a LOT of this type of story :)

Cheers,
Stanley

PS. Choc-chip is my favourite! :)

Thanks for some great recommendations on books/reading in this thread and the other (unnameable) book thread lol.

@smallest - amazon is nice and easy. Thanks for that. Looking at how many literary opinions we're getting here I'm beginning to think I need to start keeping lists of the good ones/suggestions. Maybe there should be a bdsm bookclub lol...ooh now I'm curious to find out if there is one. *dashes off*

@stanley_jeffries I've had a chance to read Making Plans for Nigel and I'd love to know know when you update, or if I'm missing the link after part 2. I'm not sure I'm into the femdom side erotically, or even denial as a kink, but the characterizations are fascinating, yes they both have substance, as well as there being a good (believable) plot. I'm invested in knowing how they get on which is the basis for enjoying any story.

It's a pity your publisher won't consider the theme of self exploration from Domme to sub, I think that would be fascinating, with great character development. Having read the threads on bdsm book threads I'm beginning to think that publishers have a very narrow (sometimes scarily misguided) take on the subject. They seem to think everyone reads only for sexual gratification and if so I feel a little offended by that premise. You have to let me know if your publisher changes their mind.

I'll admit to loving reading and writing very dark themes (which I would absolutely not regard as bdsm) but I think, even for kinks I don't 'get' for myself, I do love when others are happy/ satisfied in participating in their own fetishes/ kinks/ lifestyles. Not in a spying sense, but when they share enthusiasm or openly engage. I kind of like that in books. Perhaps that's a kink in itself?
