Anything that modifies your ability to perceive, understand, or control what is happening around you is risky during a scene. Doms need to be constantly in control of what's happening, while subs need to be able to stop the scene if something is going wrong. Poppers intensity sensation without putting you too much out of control, but I don't use them personally. Instead of using drugs to help manage pain, try developing breathing techniques that will help you work through the pain. They can be quite effective and are much safer than anything chemical because when you hit the limit of what they will allow you to get through, you know it's time to stop the scene.

Remember, there's good pain, which your body can convert into pleasure, and there's bad pain, which is your body's way to telling you that something is actually wrong. Drugs will dull both kinds.

Sebastian's last statement is the most telling. Both sub and Dom must know the difference between good and bad pain.
Not knowing the difference means not knowing between hurt and harm.

BDSM play can have lasting memories(good... gotta get some more), or lasting effects..... from permanent numbness, to disfuguration, gangrene, nerve damage, etc...

But there's something I don't understand. Why take drugs to dull the pain that you seem to be asking for?

Can you please elaborate on why you're asking?

Are you pitching or catching?
