butt plugs

I am very new to the BDSM lifestyle, and I have a very kind master that is being very patient and caring towards me. Part of what he wants from me is anal punishment/play. I have only once before done this, and it hurt a great deal. He's very interested in butt plugs as well. I just want to know if anyone has any advice on making my transition from anal virgin any more pleasant? any advice would be great, and I know my master would appreciate it.
